Dr. Porter was born in Spring City, Tennessee, and is a graduate of Vanderbilt University School of Medicine with honors, being elected to the Alpha Omega Honor Medical Society. He completed his Internship and Residency at Vanderbilt, followed by a two-year Fellowship in Gastroenterology at the University of New Mexico School of Medicine in Albuquerque.


He is a member of the American Society for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy, Tennessee Society for Gastrointestinal Endsocopy,  American Gastroenterological Association, American College of Gastroenterology and Tennessee Medical Association.  He was elected to fellowship in the American College of Physicians in 1986. Dr. Porter is on the medical staff of Mercy Medical Center St. Mary’s and has served on numerous medical staff committees.

Dr. Porter is married and the father of three grown children. He is a member of the Central Baptist Church of Bearden. Leisure activities include fishing and many outdoor activities.
