HEARTBURN HINTS:

  • Avoid fried and fatty food (such as french fries and other fast-food items) and spicy foods
  • Avoid chocolate
  • Avoid too much coffee, caffeine-containing beverages, and alcohol
  • Avoid citrus fruits and juices, tomato products, and pepper
  • Reduce your portions at mealtimes (less food may mean less chance for reflux)
  • Wait after meals for 2-3 hours before going to sleep
  • Lose excess weight if you are overweight, it may lessen your symptoms
  • Quit smoking or any form of tobacco
  • Raise the head of your bed with 4-inch blocks; gravity will help minimize reflux of stomach contents
  • Avoid tight clothing and belts
  • Avoid excessive bending over or lifting heavy objects for 1-2 hours after large meals
