HEARTBURN HINTS:
- Avoid fried and fatty food (such as french fries and other fast-food items) and spicy foods
- Avoid chocolate
- Avoid too much coffee, caffeine-containing beverages, and alcohol
- Avoid citrus fruits and juices, tomato products, and pepper
- Reduce your portions at mealtimes (less food may mean less chance for reflux)
- Wait after meals for 2-3 hours before going to sleep
- Lose excess weight if you are overweight, it may lessen your symptoms
- Quit smoking or any form of tobacco
- Raise the head of your bed with 4-inch blocks; gravity will help minimize reflux of stomach contents
- Avoid tight clothing and belts
- Avoid excessive bending over or lifting heavy objects for 1-2 hours after large meals
